    Sand, sand, and sand. Then go over it with steel wool until you're satisfied with it.

    Drift wood can be coated with polyurethane.

    I did several pieces for different places they are using them to compliment decor in their new house. I used a pressure washer with the delicate nozzle. Be sure not to use any of the stronger nozzles. You could end up with markings from the water or in some cases completely rear apart the wood. You just want to get is good and clean to spot the polyurethane. I believe I used the clear gloss finish. I like the clear satin as well

    Spray on polyurethane does the trick. Just do several fine, even coats.
