How to check furnace for winter?

Don't want to hire a heating & cooling company for "tune-up" What can I do to make sure things are ready. Furnace is 8 yrs old.

    Sometimes if your not familiar with this it can save you money with the professionals.

    They can tell you if it’s working optimally eventually saving you money on wasted oil.

    You can char the filter and that easy stuff.

    I agree with Judy a winter service us only like 60 bucks and usuly includes a new filter.

    Best to hire a good honest heating contractor. They can check everything out. Clean out burner compartment if needed. Check wiring. Check thermostat, Check operation. Check blower motor. Check humidifier if you have one. Just keep an eye on them and don't fall for any "extras". All you can do is change the filter once a month.

    Look for coupon or ask when you call professional if they are running special. I needed a check-up and a new thermostat that I bought. I opted for 1 hr rate vs check-up + thermostat fee. I saved over $70.
