I would try using bleach in an all-white load of laundry.

Soak dirty white socks in one cup bleach and 1 cup dish washing liquid in hot water over night and then wash in the washing machine in the morning.

Do not use bleach in the soak or wash. Bleach tends to make whites dingy and grey. Also breaks down the fibers over time. Soak the sox in a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and warm water for a few hours or overnight. Then wash as normal. I use a few glugs of hydrogen peroxide and detergent when I wash my whites. Whitens and safer than bleach. Most oxygen based detergents are peroxide based.

I add a little 20 Mule Team Borax to the wash. Borax is good for a lot of household cleaning.
