How can I keep the woodpeckers from attacking my wood shingle house??

Boy, do I feel your pain! Had a 50-year-old old house with cedar siding that the flickers apparently had been going at over some decades according to neighbors. When we bought the house there were no problems until the following spring. They do the drilling in the spring as part of their mating ritual. They came back to the same area where they had in previous years. I consulted with our local extension office — you may want to contact one in your area. They are generally in every county in each state, And are off shoots from your states agricultural university. They are a wealth of information on many many subjects. At any rate they helped solve our flicker problem permanently. This is what we did:

Immediately fill all holes with expandable foam, the type you buy and I can at a home improvement store. You can smooth it flat with a putty knife to match your siding, or sand any excess off for later repainting. Next hang shiny reflective objects that move in the area where they have been pecking. You can hang old CDs or DVDs or pie pans from the gutters or soffit with string or fishing line. You just want to make sure that the wind catches them and provides movement. Tacking mirrors directly on the siding where the holes were is also effective. I found the easiest and best thing at a local party supply store. It was mylar skirting for tables that was cut into thin strips much like a hula skirt. It was silver with sort of a iridescent finish that really caught the light, kind of like the CDs. I just tacked that across the area. Your house may look a little tacky and circus like for a little while, but it is well worth the effort.

The last thing that seems counterintuitive but, again was recommended by the extension office, was to hang a Flickr/woodpecker nesting box in one of our trees on the property. The idea is that if you provide them with a place to nest, they will not be looking to build such in the side of your home. I’m not sure about the validity of this last point, although we did put up a nesting box and they did use it. But the reason I am not sure is that sometimes I see and hear woodpeckers drilling on metal roof vents. Surely they must know that they will never get through that material!

We had the same issue and eventually just switched to Hardy Board siding. 50 year warranty. Actually cement board but looks like wood. I know.....expensive but something to consider on your next home improvement.
