There is paint specially made for this type of project. My advice is to go to Sherwin Williams and purchase their door paint. It is so much better than big box store and a door is something you want to make sure you don't have to re-do until you are ready for a change.
Apply a coat of metal primer first. Rust-oleum has great options in spray. Then if your door is on the outside, roll or brush exterior paint. If it is indoors, you can roll or brush any acrylic paint. The same you use on your walls. Good luck!

I would pass on the Sherwin Williams. Even with their 30% off coupons it is pricey and have not had any better luck with it than Behr or Valapar.
