How do I keep my small house warm with just one small gas wall heater?

The house is very old, built in 1950. I have added insulation to two rooms, but the house was built to low to the ground. The floors are really cold in the winter and I always have issues with pipes freezing.

You can wrap your pipes to insulate them- they sell the foam covers at Lowes, Home Depot, etc and costs maybe $4 for a bag of them. Also if you don't have carpet you should get some- even better to use padding underneath the carpet. There are places that sell it inexpensively such as Ollies but you can also look for some free on craigslist, etc. Last winter we went to Ollies and got a piece of finished edge carpet for our bedroom for about $75 and it's really helped the cold in that room.

There is tape that you can use to keep the pipes open when it is really cold out. I lived in a turn of the century house with the original unfinished stone wall basement and no insulation except for under the siding. We used it on the water pipes to the washer and dryer. You just wrap the pipes and plug it in when you think the pipes will freeze. Put down lots of rugs on the floor. Use space heaters in other rooms and run fans to distribute the warmth if needed. Turn the space heaters on just before you need the room, like a bedroom or before you take a bath, etc. I hope this helps you deal with keeping your house a little warmer!
