How to clean up Hostas?
Is there less work to cut back hostas in the Spring after the snow is gone and before new growth takes place or cut back before winte’s arrival?

I think before winter's arrival, because they become so thick and overbearing. It's difficult to catch them in the Spring before new growth takes over with the previous growth. It keeps them in better condition.
Hello Trish, Hope your day is going well. Cut back the rest of the greenery on hostas after it has died back in fall – October or early November in coastal areas and up to a month earlier inland. Although it would not hurt the plant to leave withered foliage on the plant, the foliage gives slugs, weevils and assorted rodents a handy shelter until spring.
Patricia idea is right on. Maybe you could “train” them to grow in a pattern that you could create. This might be a technique you would like to experiment with. Just a suggestion 🌝
