Hi Diana. My name is Cindy. I think your question was cut off. If your intention was to ask if you should dump the soil or just remove the plant, you should dump the soil. That way the fresh soil will provide all the necessary nutrients. If this is not what you intended to ask, please come back to us with a little more info. We would love to help you.

I was wondering if I could just take half the soil out of the pots. And next year too it off with new potting soil?

I often leave the bottom third or so of soil in my pots when renewing them and it has never caused me any trouble. My logic is if the roots haven't reached that far then it isn't 'spent' I also put any soil that I do take out of pots onto my main garden

Place soil from all your pots in a wheel barrel, mix it all together then add nutrients, fertilizer, compost etc. Mix well then refill your pots. I do this each spring and my plants grow wonderfully.
