How do I use pine needles in my garden ?

I have tons of needles from my pine trees. I heard somewhere that they are bad for the gardens . But good for mulch. I'm confused. Are they good compost or bad. Winter is around the corner and I don't want to waste or get rid of the needles if possible.

put them around any bushes that like an acid soil like rhododendrens, hydranges, etc.
Depending upon your soil, you can use them as mulch - 3 inches deep. The pine needles nearest the ground will disintegrate slowly and put needed minerals back into the soil. Used as mulch, they are good for keeping weeds from growing.
Pine straw mulch (the fallen pine needles) make a great mulch for strawberries. It protects the crowns from heaving out of the soil during periods of freezing and thawing.
