Hi Elaine, try this it has worked for many a person. Pour two or three cups of vinegar where you normally put your softener. This will rinse out any dried up soap on your towels and in your machine. I know the smell will go away and ease some of our pain

The very best thing to use that is not too expensive and requires least work is a FOGGER. Foggers get into cracks and areas that scrubbing can't as it is airborn. I use Hot Shot Fogger Odor Neutralizer. It's just a little can and follow the directions exactly. I am not affiliated with them in any way. I just know they work!

Charcoal and newspaper are cheap deodorizers that really work. I cheated and bought some charcoal in a bag made for the purpose.

Baking soda is great for absorbing odors too.

Try this as a spray in the room or whatever you wish to do. in a spray bottle add 2 tablespoons of baking soda 3 cups of warm water and 3 tablespoons of fabric softener then shake it up till the baking soda is dissolved and spray it around your home.
