I remove mine each year. You may even want to fertlize it and let it sit for the winter.
Depending on where you live, I'm in zone 6 New England. It is best to remove as mush as possible some vegetables are actually perennial such as asparagus and should be left in. I try to cover me garden area with leaves or mulch.
I would remove them and replace them with fresh ones. By removing the old ones, you also remove any insect eggs or insects hiding among the leaves for the winter.
