Amaryllis culture?

How do you get an Amaryllis to grow bulbs bigger as they just continue to shrink in everyday life even if they don’t bloom again. Is there a secret to control of the temperature, water or what?

You should start soon as most greenhouses are prepping their bulbs for the Christmas season! (Hubby's job, works at a greenhouse specializing in bulbs.)

I have four amaryllis that I have had for 15 -20 years. I use Maricle grow potting soil. I set their pots outside for the summer and put tomato cages in the pots to keep the leaves from getting broken off. The more they grow in the summer the bigger the bulb will get and the better they will bloom. In the fall before the leaves freeze I take them out of the pots and set them in a cardboard box without dirt. I don't cut the leave off until they turn brown. Letting them die down slowly puts more nutrients into the bulb. I put them in a dark cool room for the winter. In March I put them in the pots with Maricle grow dirt and set them in a south window. They bloom beautifully.

Amaryllis bulbs need some dormancy time to recharge. Are you letting your bulbs go dormant. For instance, mine have been outside all summer and I've been fertilizing them. Even though they haven't bloomed the bulbs are getting fertilized. I will bring them in now and put them in a cool, dry and dark spot and let them go dormant. After Christmas, I will pull them out and repot the bulbs in fresh soil and put them in a sunny window. I usually get blooms in March. I hope this helps and good luck!
