  • Hey barbie, bamboo is super invasive and spreads like wild fire! I have a similar plant from hell story and let me tell you how i finally got rid of it. Soak the area, really soak it. i mean pudding consistancy soil, super SOAKED. Then pull out every tiny bit of roots you can find, all if it or it will come back! Dump a bag of pool salt, ice cream salt, whatever salt you can get your hands on, just make sure you use a lot. Stir it into the pudding soil. Nothing will be able to grow there for awhile, so after it dries stick a potted plant on top to cover the dead spot.

    Hi Barbie,

Bamboo is sometimes tough to eliminate. :( The best advice I've read is two-fold. First use some sheet metal to box in the entire root system of the plant. Dig at least 2 feet deep around the plant. That will help keep the roots from spreading. Next cut it down every time you see it coming above the grown. The theory is that this will eventually wear out the plant because it will continue to try to grow. You can also block the entire area around the plant from receiving any light. That will make the whole process a little faster. Pouring vinegar on the place where you cut the plant is another tip - but you have to do it frequently. Be patient because it can take a long time to to completely kill the plant. Wishing you the best.

If it is in the bamboo plant family, you truly have a plant from hell. It spreads by underground riszons. Your only option is to dig it out. Nothing short of Agent Orange will kill it.

    Hi Barbie,

I had the same problem a few years back and researched it on the internet to get some much needed advice for the clump that we had.

We got rid of ours by cutting in down to the ground, and then mowing over it - every week for about two months. I know it sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but it worked. We don't have that clump that was taking over our back yard. Like you, we tried vinegar, salt, bleach, weed killer, boiling hot water; but they did nothing.

There's something about its growth cycle that needs to be halted, that's why you need to continue mowing it and that stops it from growing. Eventually, it gives up and can't survive the continual re-growth process if its being kept at ground level.

    Best of luck!
