When planting several varieties of grapes, consider the growing habits of each type. Space European (Vitis vinifera) cultivars 6 to 7 feet apart; more vigorous American (V. labrusca) cultivars need between 7 and 9 feet between plants, according to the Oregon State University Extension. American grapes are hardy plants that tolerate all but the coldest temperatures. Many varieties are hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 7. These varieties need a certain number of chill hours each year and might not perform well in warm climates. European grapes are better suited to mild climates. Try "Sweet Lace" (Vitis vinifera) and "Flame Grapes" (Vitis labrusca), which are hardy in zones 6 through 9.

  • Yes, but follow Kelly's suggestions. An acquaintance of mine has a grape arbor in his back yard and grows several varieties and we are in Zone 9.
