I've always put coffee grounds near where they travel. Ants can't digest it, and it kills their queen because they take it back to her. Another remedy that I was told (but only if it's a private area - ) is to have a bunch of boys pee on the ant hills. It worked for my step dad out in california. Good luck!!!

Try sprinkling Jiffy Cornbread mix around their mound. They take it back into the nest and eat it but they are unable to digest the cornmeal and die.
