Getting poinsettias to produce their colored bracts, which are modified leaves, is a complicated process not easily done without a special greenhouse. They must be TOTALLY deprived of ALL LIGHT for a certain # of hours (14+?) on a strict schedule. Even moonlight will interfere. I won't try to go into more detail, but it's not practical for most people's situations.

Mine bloom every year. At bed time put your plant in your closet. Get it out in the morning. It works for me ALL the time.

Laurie is correct. I've planted them and know they prefer a shady area, but am satisfied with green leaves, not red brackets as I am using them as background filler plants only.
