Hi this is Peggy. Here is some information on when to trim clematis. Plants in this clematis pruning group should be pruned before the end of July to allow blooms for next year. Pruning clematis vines that flower in summer or fall should be done in early spring, as these flowers are produced on the current year's growth. Large flowering hybrids may produce a second set of blooms.Mar 26, 2015 Clematis Pruning Groups - How And When To Trim Clematis

How do you prepare a clematis for winter?

Using sharp and clean garden scissors, cut off old blooms where they meet the stem. Be sure to clean up and dispose of all cuttings. Once the ground freezes or the air temperature drops to 25 F. (-3 C.), it is important to place a generous layer of mulch around the base of the clematis.

I live in the south but cut my clematis every fall and remove all dead leaves and limbs on it and within weeks it is greening up and starting to produce new growth and my plant is now 28 yrs old

I live in the south and I use to always leave mine until spring, it did alright but last year I decided to cut in back in the fall when it started looking bad, and it did so much better, it was so beautiful this year, so I've already cut it back this fall., I do cover it for the winter with leaves.
