If you can sew a straight line, these eclectic batik dinner napkins are ever so easy to make. You don't even have to measure or cut the fabric! They make gorgeous gifts, and they are lovely table decor.

Assorted Batik fabric quarters.

Last year at a fabric store on Black Friday, I found cotton batik fabric quarters (aka “fat quarters”) for 75 cents each.

They measured 18 X 21 inches, and I loved that the fabric was double sided – perfect for dinner napkins!

So I bought 8 assorted fabric quarters (I didn't want them all to match, just coordinate) and made a set of dinner napkins.

Here's how:

  • I double-folded the edges (about 1/4-inch per fold),
  • pinned them (using glass head pins),
  • ironed them,
  • and then hemmed the edges with my sewing machine.

The photo below shows the sewing process, although here I am using a solid-colored fabric quarter.

Hemming the dinner napkins.
  • Helpful Hint: Solid-colored fabric quarters also work well for this little project since they are also double-sided. Patterned fabric quarters (other than batik) tend to be single-sided. They could also be made into napkins, but the napkins would then have one "bad side."

Anyway, that is all there is to it. Hem and sew. What could be easier? And the fabric was made in India, machine washable.

I love the interest that they add to the dinner table. Mixing it up with a variety of different batiks keeps the look vibrant.

And now that I've had these napkins a while, I am noticing that they do launder well, and they get softer with every laundering (although they do need ironing).
