Most pallets are made of a mixture of softwoods and hardwoods. This is wood that normally are cutoffs from mills and would end up in landfills. Instead they make pallets out of them. A lot of DIY's make all kinds of things with them.

Pallet boards tend to be inconsistent thicknesses. This can be a big issue for flooring. Planing all the boards would make them consistent, but that's a lot of work. Another option is to use the pallet boards on the wall and use a different technique for the floor such as stained plywood
