How for lawn care?

After we had renovation done we had our lawn tilled and graded but now it is full of small rocks plaster and other bits of stone. Do we have to redo the whole lawn as in bringing in more topsoil? Our house is on a third of an acre and has beautiful landscaping. The lawn is completely covered with crabgrass. Help, please.

I'd let it sit thru winter and see if the player and rocks sink in then in spring bring in a landscaping co to get their feedback

    Thank you Kelli!

All the debri has to be removed. The soil needs to be amended with topsoil, peat moss, and compost. Then it can be seeded or sodded. Starting lawns need a light and airy soil.

Thank you William. My husband and I agree that this is good advice though the rocks and debris have been tilled into the soil. Do we have to remove a deep layer of soil? We are hoping the crabgrass will die this winter and we plan to start on your advice in the spring.

  • What? What? What? You paid people that left construction debris in your yard??? Wow. I wouldn't have paid them a fake copper clad red cent. Get them to come back and pick up the debris. Let them get on their hands and knees and find the junk they left behind. Completely unprofessional and totally unacceptable.

Since you are full of crabgrass, I would cut my losses and kill the grass off this winter and either reseed or sod in spring. That's my vote.

    • Whew! So happy to hear that Marcia! Happy to help. Hope they sift it well. Time consuming, but hey, if they cleaned up as they went along, you would not be in this position. Since you will have to go through the winter "as is" pay attention to the rain and snow run off so that if any regrading needs to be addressed, it can be done in the spring on their dime. Take lots of photos if there seems to be any issues. In the meantime, enjoy your renovation and the upcoming holiday season. 🎃🍁🍊🎄🎉

I agree with Naomie. Glad your having the contractor rake out the debri. No need to remove any soil once the debri is removed. Hopefully winter will kill off the crabgrass. Then just amend the soil tilling in peat moss and compost in the spring also destroying any remaining crabgrass. May or may not need any topsoil as long as the height is right.

So happy we don't have to remove that layer of soil. I really appreciate all the advice

you guys have been giving us. The local gurus at the nursery were advising removing

all the soil at quite a cost. So happy we discovered Hometalk and Hometalkers.
