Deadhead all of the flowerheads and cut the stalks way back. Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer before the first frost. They should come back with a vengeance in the spring.
I agree with Betsy, Deborah. I leave mine alone and they come back each year. Mine are mostly Hostas because of the front yard and most of the back yard being very shady. They get covered with leaves falling off the trees and I just clean them mostly off in the spring, leaving enough to help hold in the moisture until the trees are all leafed out later in the spring. They come back like gangbusters each spring.
