Conventional wisdom says that the plant blooms on last year's growth. I've never been clever enough to know what that is. Rather, I just prune out dead stems, then trim the remaining stems to the closest leaf bud I see. There are usually new leaves at intervals along the stem. I wouldn't trim too much at a time, but I think it is always wise to keep
