Barkeepers Friend is a soft soap paste. Use it with a damp sponge to get off most of the surface grit. For burnt on stains smear the BkF and use a new single edge razor blade at a 45 degree angle. It works for us.

Sprinkle some baking soda on the stove top, and rub with a sponge, cloth, or paper towel. (Using a paper towel, keeps from staining your sponge or cloth) That will usually clean the surface.
