If you have clay soil, plant your bulbs on a layer of coarse sand, so they don't rot. Adding perlite, composted cow manure, sphagnum peat moss and bulb food will insure good bulb production for many years.
It depends on what zone you are in, I am in zone 4 and getting to the end of the planting time because the fall nights have been colder than normal.
