Trim back what?
Depends on what you are trimming. Most perennials need to be cut back to about 4-5 inches. Trees need to be trimmed at the branch intersection. Don't leave a little stub behind and Don't use sealant spray. I trim roses back to a set of 5 leaves.

Best of luck.
