Check with your local county agent or greenhouses in the area and see what they recommend. It may be as simple as adding Epsom salts or peat moss to retain moisture in the soil

Our holes turned out to be grubs. We got grub x. Could be spider mites. Ask neighbors what they’ve experienced in your area. Fall is the time NOW to overseed but keep the seed moist it cannot dry. Fight the weeds with a weed and seed in the spring

Also check your soil pH and adjust the fertilizer accordingly

As Pest Control Operators from Florida we have had yards worse than this to do but I can tell you that you have a lot of things going on. First, you have a lot of weeds, buy some herbicide (weed Killer-broad spectrum) and a backpack sprayer and start there. This is a job that can't be done overnight. After the weeds are dead buy some Builders Sand from Home Depot and spread on the dead areas so that whatever you add as far as seed will take hold. I cannot tell what your grass is, kinda looks like centipede but I'm sure your neighbors probably have the same thing. Maybe come in squares versus seed but either way with a little time and effort you can get it back looking nice! Good Luck!

Put sand in the holes and the grass will grow over the sand -- voila! also, a lawn spray service is the best for keeping down weeds and growing a lush lawn. This worked for both zoysia (former home) and centipede which I now have. Within 6 months, my centipede lawn is now lush and green even after the extreme dry summer. I cancelled my service once and decided my lawn mowing service could handle the weeds, fertilizer, etc. Not so, after 6 months, I was back to the spray service.

Hi. Dig up the bald spots and put in good top soil. Over-seed the lawn and set up a good watering and fertilizing system for your region according to the agricultural extension service:

Now is the time for Epsom SAlts application. Fill sparse areas with dirt and grass seed when it is the rainy season then add your Epsom SAlts.use a spreader so it is distributed evenly. Fall is best time.
