Do you ever get fed up with the same coloured furniture? - I DO

Are you ready for a change? - I WAS

See below to find out how you can easily 'change-out' the colour of your furniture.

This table was originally creamy white. I have had it for many years - in fact it was my first Xmas present from my hubbie when we moved to Spain, which was 15 years ago. (see below the table in it's original colour and placed in our Sun Lounge)

Although it was still in very good condition I decided to change its colour at the beginning of this year and used a darkish blue Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Blue Silk and also decided to re-paint my lounge walls.

The table in it's original colour

I firstly painted my walls all in white apart from one, which I also chose a blue - but... although I painted it in blue, when it was finished I didn't really think it was the right tone of blue. Although I put up with it for a few months. Therefore, two/three weeks ago I decided to change both the wall and the table to a lighter blue.

For the dark blue, I used Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Blue Silk - giving it two coats - I had no need to sand the piece - just went straight into the painting. I let it dry overnight and prior to painting the table I took the handles off and painted them with a silver metallic paint - using a small artists brush.

TIP - when using Chalk Paint I personally like to add small amounts of water. As all Chalk Paints I have used are rather thick and when it is watered down it flows much easier and it looks and feels better. Just go sparingly with the water, as you don't want to go too overboard with the water so add little by little. You can always add but you can't take out!! It is much preferable to have two thin coats than one thick!

I always like to add some depth to some pieces of furniture instead of just having it 'plain'.  So the next day I applied Liberon wax with a soft cloth, rubbing it on but then taking some off. I then buffed the whole of the table with another clean soft cloth to give it a nice soft sheen. This wax is enough protection for this type of table as it does have a glass top.

Well..... obviously when I changed out the blue for the wall for a lighter blue, I also wanted to make yet another change to the table with a lighter blue.

First of all for this change - as I had used a silver wax on top of the previous dark blue paint - I wanted to remove the wax because I was going to use another make of paint (not chalk) and did not know how the Luxen's Satin paint would react to the wax. Therefore I just used an old rag and wiped the wax off with White Spirit, starting in an inconspicuous area. The removing of the wax took only about 10 minutes. I then went over it all with a damp cloth that had been in dish soap to clean any evidence of the white spirit and then used a dry one.

The paint I used was Luxens Satinado (Satin) - in the colour of Fjord 5 which is a really pale blue. I used 2 coats which covered the darker blue brilliantly and then used Rustoleum Transparent (Clear) Wax. I then used a soft cloth i.e. one of husband's old t-shirts to rub it in all over and another clean soft cloth to 'buff' it up. Do not put too much wax on your cloth in one go - just put it on lightly.

Putting the Rustoleum Clear Wax on

You will probably see that the table has small oval shapes at the top of the legs so I thought I would put some silver wax on those just to highlight them and give the table a little of pizzazz!

I used a small artist's brush for the oval shapes.

It took me two days to complete the table and that's only because when I paint a piece of furniture, I always leave it overnight to cure a bit more.

You will also note I used the same silver handles.

The following photos are of the 'new look' coffee table in my lounge - hope you like the new colour icon

Can you see the blue wall?

Please note I had all of the materials except the Luxens Satin Paint which cost 12 euros and there is enough left to use for another project or two
