How to finish my shiplap wall?

For the top, a simple crown molding would work.

Maybe timber (from wooden plank) slim wedge shape to fit gap would probably be less noticable

For the sides use some thin wood strips about 3/4" wide same thickness as the boards. For the ceiling area use 3" or 4" baseboard but turn it upside down. Stain same color as the shiplap. Crown molding would look a little off and you would need to compound cut returns on the ends. Unless you were to put crown molding all around the whole room.

I agree with William. Pieces of crown molding would look unfinished. Check your local Home Depot. There are a lot of choices if you want a patterned piece or just trim you can stain to match wood. I finished off the sides of my fireplace with thin strips that had a vine and leaf design embossed into the wood strip.

I’m like William, use similar or same wood cut into narrow strips. At the top don’t miter the corners, as the wood is to give a rustic look. Keep it rustic. Just frame the outside upper portions above the door and window areas. Say about 1 1/2 wide pieces laid flat. The other option (that I like better) is to rip the strips into pieces that stand up like a picture frame, like edging in your garden so that the frame stands higher than your strips, and miter the frame edges. It still keeps it rustic but with a polished flare. 3D

I too agree with William! If you want a more industrial look, use some steel flat bars

They sell a metal tile edging called schluter at Home Depot, it sits under the edge and flush against the edge of the material. I have included a photo below with tile application. I’m not sure if you have room to slip it under the edge of the wood but it gives you a great profile, has different edging options, different colors and is relatively inexpensive. You could install with adhesive. The photos are of the flat profile but you can have a rounded edge or angled edge as well. There are also different depths of profile, it might work for you.

It is gorgeous. I don't think crown molding would be appropriate. Thin strips"think yard sticks" or metal strips are perfect.

We had crown molding already, so it looked off to just leave it there. We added a small shelf about 4” from the ceiling. As I can see from the pic, we staggered the boards bc one side was in an area where we couldn’t trim. Here’s pics

Schluter would be a great idea but would have to be put under the ship lapwhich is already finished could be tricky. I think William had the best finish idea. Thanks William.

I like the look but would just trim a board to the width you want and install that as your trim. Anything else would spoil the look.

Not seeing the rest of your room or knowing you decor hard to say, but just a few ideas to toss... Thin wood strips stained the same would work. Glue hemp cord or rope around your edges. A metal striping for an industrial look. I also love the way it looks now. You did a great job.

Ilike joy’s idea of trimming with the ship lap it would frame it and not take away from the whole ship lap thing going on.

When we finished our wallpaper job and it needed an ending, we used corner molding for the ending. Any kind of thin strips of wood would probably work......whatever your choice. Work with it.......it WILL need a finishing look.

I like the shelf idea, and then place either, family heirloom or antique china, pottery..., or a greeting you can change out at the different holidays, either lit up, or metal, or wood.

I was going to suggest what Trudi suggested, hemp style rope tucked along the edge at doorway then up across the top. I once put cedar shingles on a wall in my living room so I love the lap boards! The shelf was a good idea too! That odd spot at top can always be covered w/strip of lap board or brown marker to hide the white! I do desperate things at times! ;)

Home Depot carries all sorts of trim pieces. Some have designs cut into the wood, so many choices for the side. I agree with not using simple quarter round.

I like it as, then went back and saw the white peeking through at the top where it meets the ceiling, either color it in or do the thin strip as William suggested.
