How do I keep begonias over the winter?

Have two different kinds of begonias. I read somewhere that they can survive the winter in your basement. How?

I would think they would need some sun light. I just bring them in and treat like a house plant.
Yes, I was thinking of doing that but read somewhere that they need to come out of the soil to over winter. But, if I put in a grow light I might be able to keep them going. Thanks!
The reference to keeping begonias in the basement refers to tuberous begonias. When planted in beds these begonias need to be dug up and stored during winter in a cool 45 to 55ºF area. However, if planted in pots, water should be gradually withheld during the end of the season to force the bulbs into dormancy. We just bring ours in and keep it in the basement near a window and water occassionally.
