Apparently, Lin, grape vines should be pruned back fiercely once a year. Here's more info for you:

I had a huge grapevine years ago and never trimmed it but for dead wood. Made a three sided enclosure for a bench and had it climb all over it, the massive amount of concord grapes hung inside the wires it climbed and was really easy to pick. Canned it for grape juice every year.

Hi Linda: I have 4 different types of grapes and only cut the vines that are dead, in the way or won't behave. I trim it to keep it tidy and not too long. The birds hide from the hawks in it, even in the winter when the leaves are gone. I fertilize twice a year, spring and fall, and have more grapes than I can use. So, it's kinda up to you to trim or not to trim. Some say yes, some say no. Good luck.

Are they wild? Then let them be.

I have 3 varieties and I trim them all summer long to keep them neat. We don’t use the grapes.....just use them to cover up the fence From neighbors who only mow their lawn twice every summer!
