Please figure out why it cracked in the first place. Is it due to settling? Is the foundation shifting? Is there a slow water leak someplace? If you don't fix that first, you will have more cracks.

Hi,
For small cracks and holes you can use putty. For larger cracks use drywall mud.
If the cracks are thin and small use spackle to cover them then after it dries sand the spackle and paint.
