How do you display and prepare pumpkins to best keep them from rotting?

Keep out of direct sunlight if in a warmer climate. If carving only do this a day or two before Halloween. Once carved, they begin to decay rapidly. Many people like to dunk in a water / bleach solution to slow down the decay process.
I am in Zone 9 and still in the 90's here and my front porch faces due west. I use wood, metal and resin pumpkins as real ones go mushy far too quickly. On November 1 I buy real pumpkins to use for Thanksgiving decor as you can get the leftovers for half price or less!

Don't empty then and carve them, instead just paint them. Cool temperatures also make them last longer.
Visited a pumpkin patch in Asheville, NC, and they suggested putting mop and glo over the entire pumpkin. it also looks pretty.
