    What is your floor now.?

It's old linoleum. Most of it is glued and stapled. Only where you open front door is it coming up. Have you used liquid leveling for floors?

You need a very smooth, flat surface.

You also need a surface that has been sealed and can't absorb water. Peel and stick tiles are not waterproof

No but it helps if floor is level,so may need to put down plywood or self leveling cement to get it level and you need to use a latex floor primer first or they won't stick especially if it's over wood or concrete or anything else that is porous

No primer is needed for vinyl floor tiles. They are made to stick over old flooring except ceramic or any stone tile. Grout lines will show.

Yes, to lay self-stick tiles, you need a very flat surface! And preparation (very clean, non-greasy floor) is a must so they stick and not show imperfections from underneath.

If the floor is basically level they can can be installed over the linoleum. If the floor is really out of level then a self leveling compound would be needed. No primer is needed. They are flexible enough to cover minor imperfections. Floor leveling compound is basically used to level floors for stone flooring installation. Just make sure the floor is clean and dry. They are waterproof and the best choice for kitchens and baths. I have used floor leveling compounds to level floors and install cement board for stone tile installation. I have installed self stick vinyl over concrete, wood floors, sheet vinyl flooring, and old asbestos vinyl tiles (which is EPA recommended). I have also installed them on accent walls for a wood look.
