How and when do I fertilize trees?

Is it necessary to fertilize red maples, river birch and purple leaf ash? If so, are spikes best?

In zone 6, it's never been necessary to fertilize maples. Birch and Ash trees have needed treatments to prevent borers fro killing the trees.
Not fertilizing advice but watering. Drive a pvc pipe into the ground so that it will carry water to the roots rather than spreading on the surface. When you water, pour into the pipe.
