Use a contrasting color....black, white, brown, tan.
Hi Valerie, there really is no best color...it should be a color that makes you happy. Personally, I prefer to keep the doors the same color as the room so the room doesn't feel chopped up to me, but that's just me. You may prefer something totally different. Perhaps you could browse through some decorating sites to see what others have done with color. Some people like black doors to add sophistication, some like bright colors to add a focal point. Your choice!
My house was standard builder grade Navajo white (detest that color immensely), when I purchased the home. I repainted a bright blue white before moving in as it was at least fresh clean paint. My house has a lot of light, but it is much smaller than the national average. I used a semi gloss or gloss paint on the doors as it is easier to wipe down when necessary.
It depends upon the style of your home, your personal taste and what look you are going for. I prefer bright, crisp and clean. This may not suit your home or taste. Some people have gone to black interior doors. It can look cool, but does it suit the home? Unless your hallway is well lit or has windows, it might be dark.
What color are your rooms? What about the hallways? Choose something that provides a cohesive appearance when looking down the hall.
If the wood is nice and in good condition you can use a contrasting color to add a design element. But in most cases they should be the same color as the walls in a gloss which will give you the ability to keep bars and doors clean.
