How to use gel paint on my front door?

by Sandy

I have a metal front door with a storm door it faces East and gets very hot. I am looking for a gel paint Dark Brown that does not leave brush marks, I saw something like this on a local home improvement show but no one in my area sells any . Dark Brown is the color of the trim on the house. The doors are the standard flat White metal that get very dirty over time and is impossible to clean and the next step is painting..Any body have any experience out there with some good door paint...Thanks in advance..

If it gets, full sun and gets very hot, the dark paint will crackle. Maybe choose an accent color in mid tone colors. Also use a semi gloss so you can clean it easier. There is a primer made specifically for metal doors that allows you to use a quality exterior latex. It was from Benlamin Moore paints. I'd go to your local BM dealer and get what they recommend for your project.

    Hi Sandy,

I found another discussion about this same topic on Hometalk with several ideas that might work for you. One thing someone said is that it's best if you keep the door white because it will tend to reflect the heat whereas a dark color will absorb more heat. Just something to think about. Check out this discussion which started in 2012 and continued through 2017. You should find something that will help. Wishing you the best.

How do I paint a metal entry door to withstand extreme heat & sun?

I would go to a paint specialty store to get advice like Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. You want to make sure to get a good paint and do a job that is going to stand the test of time.
