How to shine up sterling silverware?

My husband put our sterling silverware in the dishwasher against my wishes. Now there is a dark film on them. I tried using Baking soda and that worked for a while. They are getting dull again. Help please.

I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.

Carol, see if this works for you. We can try something else if it doesn't.

Try using plain white old fashioned toothpaste with no gel or additives. It cleans up and polished many metals. Unless you keep your sterling in a silverware box mad to keep off the oxidation, or bags you can get, they will continue to tarnish over time. It is just the way sterling is and always will be. Never use any home remedy with salt in it, it turns sterling black. I went into a saltwater hot tub once and forgot to take my sterling necklaces off, needless to say they were black and took forever to clean and stay clean. The aluminum foil method takes a little of the metal off each time you use it and also leaves a greyish film on the items that needs to be scrubbed off.

  • Hi Carol - This is the most effective and all-natural silver cleaning and polishing method that we use. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly
