  • Hi Judy - This is one of my favorite articles on cleaning, organizing and decluttering. It really breaks down the steps of the process, and even includes an interview with TV show Hoarders star Matt Paxton. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

First sort through your stuff - get rid of what you don't want first and then I like to always begin organization with the closet.

You know the best thing I ever heard was if you don't use it in a year, then lose it. The biggest thing is not buying...stuff that you really don't need. Then rule of thumb is when you bring something new in, get rid of something old. Store like items together and containerize. This really helps. I also purchased years ago the Rubbermaid drawer orgainzers...they house all of my knives, kitchen tools, etc. Whenever I move I just take these out of the drawers and pack them. Easy. Also, make the inside of your cabinets, pretty. I have my kitchen cabinets wallpapered, lasts a long time and washable. (make sure it's solid vinyl) I paint the inside of all my closets a pretty color, and some have stencils inside as well. Why should they just be white. You can do a lot with a simple shelving unit that fits in a space, by outfitting it with baskets or changing the shelves to suit your needs. Just some ideas . Hope they help. There are items I would like, however, I don't have a place to put them so I don't by a lot of unnecessary items. L.Caristo

Whichever mode of organization you decide on, don't let it overwhelm you. You don't have to do the whole or any other pecentage of the room in a single swoop. Take it a box at at time if your have to, or a corner at a time. Eventually everthing will has its final resting place and you can finally rest! Good luck.

I would unpack the big stuff, like your bed and get it set up and made first. I would also put some toiletries in the bathroom and have at least one change of clothes easily available. At the end of a long day of moving and unpacking, being able to crawl into a made bed is comforting.

I am so guilty of the buy something but can't part with anything after mindset, but anyway...

Because of this I do alot of rearranging. I start by leaving the big items I love and incorporating a little of this and that of my smaller loved items building and creating my new space as I go along.

The result is always different and eclectic but that's what makes it so fun.

I have a rule. For every one thing that comes into the house at least one thing goes out. It has worked well for me. Clutter stresses me out. I find it very relaxing to organize and declutter. I know that I have far more then I need.
