I need to make a room divider. For next to nothing! I saw on market place antique doors for $5 each . but they were solid wood and I imagine heavy. Any ideas or suggestions?

Old doors are a great idea! They can be hinged together so they zig-zag and stand up safely. I would either paint each door a different color or all one color depending on your decor.

  • Doors can be used. Attach them with hinges and use L brackets to attach the doors to the floor or walls for stability. You might be able to find a cheap screen on facebook marketplace to redo. Good luck!

Solid wooden doors might be a bit heavy, but you can always add small wheels at the bottom (the ones that can lock) so it's easier to move. Another idea would be to make a basic frame and add fabric on the inside. Here are few more ideas - https://homeguides.sfgate.com/make-inexpensive-room-dividers-64966.html

I agree with Homeroad as to using the old doors. I would make a further suggestion of using Loose pin hinges where the hinge pin can be removed to be able to move the moves if need be.

Old shutters. I believe chippy shutters would look great and lighter than doors and put together the same as doors. I use an old chippy shutter horizontally as a headboard.

For a very lightweight and fairly inexpensive divider, you can purchase lightweight 1 x2" boards at Lowe's for about 98 cents each. Form three rectangles and nail or staple together. You can measure in for legs or just keep all three level w. the floor. Go to any fabric store, choose a fabric on sale and buy enough to cover the rectangles and staple the fabric to the frames. Also, purchase hinges so you can close the divider up or open to a desired angle. You would need about four hinges. You could probably do this method for under $30....maybe even under $25 depending on fabric sale and cost of hinges. You might have to add extra bits of wood on one side or the other to help balance the divider while setting it up. Best of luck to you!! I think maybe Menard's is like Loewe's. With fabric, you can jazz it up or make it thick and dark for morning sleepers. Good luck!!!

I think old doors --- esp for $5 each are perfect! You would REALLY have room divider -- instead of something flimsy. The loose pin hinges are a marvelous idea!

I’ve used 1x4’s to make a frame. Add a18” piece of 2x4 cut thru the middle for legs. Then I added fabric. You can also do a double frame and sandwich the fabric like cheap sheets.

The old doors could be great if mounted on locking casters so you could move them, if needed.

Old doors for $5 !!! That's great !!! They would make an interesting room divider. I would hinge them together. If its to be permanent, you could attach one end to the wall , for more stability.

Post your process , we would love to see how it turns out !

I attached two lightweight hollow core doors to posts, attached to floor and ceiling to add a faux entry and devider.
