I've seen it done only. Glue it on and then tack it in place. Fill up the nail holes with nail filler, let that dry and paint. This is assuming you have the right size cut and ready to place.
We used strips of very thin (1/4") wood. Like plywood or luan, ripped into strips with a table saw. Sanded and painted before we applied them to our flat cupboard doors by glueing (locktite) and nailing with small brads. We clamped them for 30", until they dried. Don't forget to cualk any cracks before you paint. Beadboard wall paper was applied to the inset. Then painted again with good, semi-gloss paint.
