How can I store women’s wide brim hats on the wall?

  • You could mount hooks on the wall and keep all of the hats in one area, to form an accent wall of sorts... what a cool way to combine form with function! I'd recommend hooks with rubber on the ends so the hats don't slip off.

  • My girlfriend is the hat queen, hundreds and hundreds of them. I have a lot too, as I lost track and am counting again soon as I just acquired more. Only use this method as temporary decor or storage. Eventually the hat will lose its shape and not fit right or look pretty. They become dusty, faded and misshapen.

    • In hatboxes! Which used to be reasonably easy to find at Nordstrom Rack, Home Goods, T J Maxx, but now just small ones are available, if you can find them. Available on line and obviously the cost is more. I have purchased shipping boxes and covered in gift wrap or contact paper. I grew up in the era where there were fur salons and millinery departments in the "better" department stores and when a lady purchased a hat it came with a box! If you purchase a hat in a high end shop or have custom made, yes you get a box, but my hats cost significantly less = no box. I have a couple Louise Greens and Helen Kaminski's but the rest are lesser known hat makers. One straw hat that I always receive compliments on was one I picked up for $3 at Kmart, imagine that?

    Hi Donna,

The safest way to store hats so that they stay clean and keep their shape is to use boxes that will hold each hat. You can also prop it up from the inside with tissue paper to help it keep it's shape. Some hats could be stacked if they are exactly the same type of hat, but again, I'd definitely stuff the bottom had and be very careful that they truly fit together. I know finding boxes for each hat and finding a place to put them will be a challenge. Do you have a closet that you can outfit with shelves? Can you find an unused wall and build a new storage closet? Would the fit into several under-the-bed storage containers? Maybe you could find an old dresser with deep drawers, where you could remove the drawers, paint it and store the boxes that way. You could then attache the empty drawers to a wall for more storage. I'm just tossing out ideas here. :)

Here's an article about the correct way to store hats. I hope this helps you.

Hi Donna. My name is Cindy. You could use a tension curtain rod and hang your hats using S hooks with clips. Best wishes.
