How to care for a new nectarine tree?

I purchased a small (about 3') Nectarine tree in the spring, to replace a tree that needed to be cut down. It has been on my patio all summer, in a container. I'm not ready to put in the ground, until the "old stump" is completely gone....next spring. Do I need to bring it in the house over winter? I live in Kentucky.

Yes you will need to bring it in, will die if it freezes.

What about, next year? Can I plant it in the ground and leave it there?

  Yes you can get it in the ground next spring. This will help you out.
