I've always used the'knock on the wall method' where you knock and listen for a more solid sound when you hit the stud. Also, studs are supposed to be 16" on center, so you can measure. Another trick is to look for an outlet. They are attached to studs. You can also buy, or borrow a stud-finder to be extra sure!
Use this stud finder:

You can purchase a stud finder, they aren't expensive. Ann's "outlet" tip is great. You can also secure with toggle bolt drywall anchors. The big drawback on those is if you remove it, there will be a hole in the wall because they spread once they are on the other side of the drywall.
Hi Kate,
I'm Linda and I agree with Ann. She has explained great methods. We finally purchased a stud finder and it really made it so much easier to find them. It's a great tool to have in your "tool box". Wishing you the best.
Use a stud finder. A great tool to have. If possible, I hang large heavy mirrors using two hooks with both hooks installed into studs. (If the mirror is heavy it's usually at least 16" wide so hitting two studs is easy. Of course sometimes those pesky studs just aren't in the place you want the mirror hung!)
