Since it's a kitchen table and will see a lot of use. You need to seal your wonderful hard work. Sealers come in either a latex or urethane base. Contact your favourite hardware store and ask one of the clerks in the paint section for advice. You may have specific concerns on the type of finish you would like. Shiny, satin, matte. If the surface would be in contact with a lot of water, if you have kids: something safe for them too, if you will be using the table to help prepare food etc. (mine gets used for everything!)

    Hi Doreen,

Either Use Antique or Clear Wax finish, but for a more robust finish, use Polyurethane Varnish.

I put 3 coats of polyurethane on mine. Between each coat, I lightly roughed with fine steel wool. It's been 4 years and it still looks like brand new.

    HI Doreen,

I'm Linda. If everything looks good, then the next step is to seal the table top. Look for a non-yellowing sealer. Many people have had great success with a polycrylic or marine varnish. You'll need to put on several coats, so be sure to follow the directions on the can regarding how long to wait before adding the next coat and how long it takes for the seal to fully cure. Congratulations for saving a kitchen set and giving it new life. Wishing you the best.

I would apply a clear polyurethane sealant. I prefer a matte look to glossy personally. Good luck!
