How can you clean painted walls that were dirtied by smoke?

We just lit the first fire in our woodstove and sometime between this fire and having cleaned the chimney at the beginning of summer a bird had built a nest in the chimney and it caused smoke to pour into our living room! We have since removed the nest and repaired the screen at the chimney cap, but the white walls in the living room are now sporting a thin layer of soot! It is going to be a big job and I was wondering if there are any recommendations as to what product(s)/tool(s) can help to remove the soot from the walls and ceiling most effectively?
