Can I paint my popcorn ceiling?

Would it devalue my fireplace to paint it out in white? It is currently gray brick.
We have built-ins on either side of our gray brick fireplace, and I would love to paint the fireplace out in white. However, my husband feels it would be a bad idea.
What is the surface of your countertop?
1953 plastic laminate or what material? If plastic laminate, please see my other response on that product.

Rustoleum's Cabinet Transformations and Giani Countertop Paint are 2 options.
If they are plastic laminate (aka Formica, Wildonart, et al), yes the above/cited products will work.
But, seriously, 1953, then there’s little left of the Wear Surfice and that exposes the Mica Backing, which is not water proof.
It’s time for new countertops & a kitchen remodel.
