Homestores sell peel and stick items to make glass opaque, but permit light entry.
Draperies that pull open to each side. Mount them starting about 6" or more past the trim so when open they stack back on the trim, not the glass.
there are window cling sheets that are held in place with water, there are a few patterns to choose from. I covered the bottom of the window with the sheets, and left the top window panes uncovered. there are few odd windows in this house.....

For privacy without blocking the light I would suggest cellular shades. These products are energy efficient and will allow the light to glow through the material. I would also suggest a top down bottom up shade. You can lower the top of the shade down to let in more light, while keeping the privacy on the bottom of the window
Frosted privacy window film is fairly inexpensive ($10-15) for a generous amount. This film is ideal if you are living in a rental home, do not want to damage the windows or close the curtains. With the film, you are still receiving natural sunlight.
I have also heard about spritzing water on the window and putting wax paper on the glass. I have also heard of doing the same with bubble wrap. The wax paper is in grocery departments in the same section as foil wrap and baggies, etc. The bubble wrap is in the stationary department at my local WalMart. You can also buy sheer curtain panels, etc. at WalMart.
