Hi Susan! Decide first if you are going to work with the same footprint or change it first. Take measurements of your space, including height. Then the fun part! Do some window shopping online and in person, seeing what appeals to you. When I redid my teeny walk in closet, that's what I did. I changed the lighting, too. Painting the walls and/or ceiling will give you a more custom look. Think about the types of items you will keep in the closet(s), and find what works best with the space. My husband, when he did his, wanted long wood shelves on the long sides, and one height for hanging. Mine had multilevel adjustable shelving and hanging. I stalked my stuff for months, waiting for sales and saved lots of money doing it. Does the door or doors need an upgrade? I changed a bifold door to French doors by removing the center hinge and other hardware, painting them a fresh color and rehanging them separately. Make each the way you want it and need it to be!

Depending on your budget, you can consult with a custom closet company. Wallpaper and nice shelving will go a long way to change the looks. Add a few custom things like jewelry organizers. Try searching closet makeover for lots of ideas.

Hi Susan. I'm Cindy. Most home improvement stores have closet systems where you can buy shelves and rods ala cart. So, you are not obligated to buy pieces that you won't use. We moved into our current house 2 yrs ago. I have worked on our bedroom closet a little at a time. I painted a small dresser the same color as the closet and placed it in the corner. When I finish that part of the closet, I will put trim in for a custom look. I also put shoe storage for shoes and boots. I like taking my time and installing just what I need. A full length mirror has been put in too. Good luck to you Susan.
