How do I get rid of cat urine smell in my home?

Hi. There are sprays at the pet stores just for this purpose. Use those. They have enzymes that eliminate the odor. Nothing else will do that. Put down wee pads around the box that are typically used for puppies. Even if he misses, it's easier to clean up.

Older cats like their litter very clean and odor free, I've noticed. I use a natural grass litter that has no fragrance. It stopped my older cat from making a real mess. I also clean it out once a day and use litter box liners. The liners make it so much easier to scoop and get everything out so there's nothing left.

Cat pee is really hard to get out of anything even if we can't smell it, they can, or when it's wet it still smells. Cleaning with baking soda, peroxide and dishsoap really helps. It usually requires multiple treatments. For an elder cat, it's extremely important to scoop EVERY DAY. This is what helped our elder cat to have better aim. Also keep a minimum of 3" of liter at all times.

I know this isn't in answer to your odor question but I just wanted to add that I haven't used traditional "litter boxes" in years. I use Rubbermaid storage containers that I cut down on one end and no more accidents outside the box or on the walls.

For my elder cat I use a very low cat litter box 3” tall as she has arthritis. I scoop twice a day as I have 4 kitties. I would use a vinegar water combination. Be careful as this will lighten the wood floor as will hydrogen peroxide. I used vinegar and water for a dark urine stain and lightened it significantly.

After you clean, to prevent further problems do what I did. Buy a roll of plastic carpet path protector (with the little teeth on the back). I cut it to fit an area larger than the litter box(es) so any little "misses" land on the plastic where it is easily wiped up. Also easy to sweep up litter from the paws than it is off carpet.

Very inexpensive, comes in different lengths. Got it at Wal-Mart.

Vinegar

won't get rid of the smell but it will protect surface under littterbos; put a clear plastic shower curtain underneath, it can be removed and washed.

I’ve had much success using straight rubbing alcohol. I had tenants whose cats regularly missed their box and the smell was sickening. I cleaned and then soaked the corner with alcohol and let it dry. It took a few times but the smell is permanently gone now. The trick is killing the bacteria. Rubbing alcohol works.
