How can I make my septic mound easier on the eyes?

Hi Vickey. Congrats on the new house. Make it into a planting area for flowers. They will grow great there! Use bulbs for all the different seasons and they'll come up year after year. If the mound every needs to be dug up, just lift the bulbs and replant after the work is finished.

Hello, My brother inlaw has the same mound situation and he has placed daylillies iris and other flowers in the mounted alternative septic area. You might wish to check with your local experts for the best recommendations as not to interfere with septic function and your planting zone.

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.

Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.

The top of the mound will be much drier than the sides & lower surrounding area so you'd want to use more drought tolerant plants on top Pentstemon,Daylily,Cosmos;bulbs as "Bijous" says Freesia,Crocus,Tulips,Daffodil mixed in around top & sides with Snap dragons & some Ferns tucked in a few places. Just check the height on the plants your planting & stagger them so they don't cover each other up.Take into consideration the mound height too. Daylilies,Cosmos & Ferns do come in all different heights.Also need to check lighting conditions These plants would be more out in open full sun for blooms. You don't really even need to make an actual garden bed just lay out the plants on the mound and dig holes where you want them then put bulbs inbetween and then dig up small patches and throw some seeds down. water to get everything established. You can even do this if it's grass.The top of the mound will need a little more water than bottom.If you really want to get a work out. You could also add some river rock along front of mound to simulate dry creek bed.With shorter varieties of Ferns And Grasses around the rocks.
